El Salvador: Day 2

We had an amazing and wonderful second day in El Salvador. The highlight of the day for many, including myself, was worshipping at Cristo Rey Lutheran Church. Our group had the privilege of worshiping with the people of Cristo Rey, led by Pastor Carlos. The service was translated into English for us, and several of us were asked to help read the lessons.

The first of many Spirit moments was when the the Gospel lesson was read. It was the story of the Good Samaritan, which is the exact same scripture that was read at Sheridan on Sunday. All of us felt so connected to all of you from Sheridan, knowing we were hearing the same word from God that Pastor Rhonda was preaching about.

For me, the most amazing Spirit moment was when I was asked to help with communion. I just assumed that meant I was going to just help distribute communion, but that was not the case. Pastor Carlos invited me up to altar, placed a stole on me, and asked me to bless the communion elements in English before he did in Spanish. It was such a honor to be asked to preside at communion in Pastor Carlo’s congregation. At the end of the worship service, Pastor Carlos also asked me to do the blessing in English. Even though we did not speak each others’ languages, we were able to speak God’s love, grace, and mercy together.

The team is bonding very well. We know that it is only by God’s doing that this group of people came together to do His work. We start on the construction sites tomorrow and are very excited about getting started building houses. But it is very clear that building houses is only part of what we are doing here. We are also building relationships with fellow brothers and sisters in Christ.

God Bless, Pastor Jeremy
